I’m always so happy to see my friend and great artist Victor Hempel on Anguilla. Travelling on his boat throughout the Caribbean basin, I never know when the gallery will be graced by his talents. Well, this is the week! These “Nature Boards” are beautiful examples of this truly intuitive talented artist. A superb Bresil painting is currently hanging in the gallery – the work of this late great Haitian master always delights the eye. This is a fine small (30 x 40″) painting from the the late l980′s.

Sisson Blanchard

Sisson Blanchard (1929-1981) was a great Haitian painter, whose innovative work combined elements of rural Haiti with a sort of rhythmic contemporary style of painting. I’m delighted to have this work of his “Roosters” in the gallery now. The perfect roti…..

If you pass by the gallery on any Saturday and hear moaning, please don’t call the Vice Squad……. It’s just me, enjoying my Saturday treat of a roti (or two) from Proctors Supermarket. Wikipedia has mountains of info for those who seek it, but basically a roti is a type of flatbreaad, turned into a sandwich, which came from India to the southern Caribbean. The roti from Proctors is curried chicken and potato, and is made by a lady from Guyana who brings them in on Saturdays. The wrap is as close to eating silk as I would imagine possible. Perfectly seasoned, this is a five buck treat not to be missed.

I was delighted to see so many wonderful artworks hanging in the home of great collectors when I delivered a Julio Balan metal sculpture this morning. These folks have been slowly acquiring these artworks through the years…. The Balan hangs above two Paul Elliott Thuleau giclee prints, and the “Whale with Mermaid” by Serge Jolimeau looks so strong above that cabinet. That wall of masks blows me away; a huge diversity, though many are by the famed Haitian mask-maker, Eugene Jacques. Bravo, for your efforts!

East End Beaches

Francis Eck – The Wow Factor

Francis Eck’s new paintings are stopping me in my tracks every time I walk by them. Whether it’s the vibrant beauty of “Pour Toi”, the remarkable rich still life, or the subtle pure loveliness of these new monochromatic landscapes, such as “Le Monde de Silence III”, Eck’s oils in palette knife delight the eye. “Swing” is a new genre to the gallery – it will be interesting to see how many artists portray the sport of golf………. Francis Eck is a keen player, so he knows of what he paints!!

Lunch @ Jacala

One of my favourite lunch spots had one of my favourite lunch specials today. The surf on Meads Bay was wild, yet the lunch at Jacala was sublime. Grilled crayfish and French saucisson nestled on a bed of local greens, arugula and local tomatoes, all sitting atop some rockin’ guacamole. Bravo, Chef Alain!
