I just installed two very fine vintage Haitian sculptures in the gallery today, both quite wonderful. The first is a mask, 13″ high, signed only “Riche”, but different than any other Haitian mask I’ve ever seen. It combines wood, scrap metal, nails and rope, yet also has some very fine carving on the gentleman’s “hat”. The second is more of a classic imagery, and this musician, 33″ high, is signed Jacques Midi, who in fact, is quite a well known carver. Both superb works, and they compliment the Haitian paintings I’ve hung around them.
