Lunch at Cuisinart

Posted by: frank in News No Comments »

It’s a good thing I’m a power-walking fool, or these lunches out might really get the best of me……….  Had a lovely lunch at Cuisinart today – an old favourite.  Their gardens are lush and gorgeous as always – such a pleasure to stroll through.  I always enjoy the burger and fries poolside – I think their fries are among the best on Island.  Great presentation too!

Cuisinart’s main dining room has a display of metal sculptures from the Gallery – they look great in the indoor\outdoor setting.  I especially love this one of the ladies in the rain, on such a great sunny day, as today was.cuis 1cuis 2

Chapon Exhibition

Posted by: frank in News No Comments »

There are, of course, many wonderful art galleries and artists studios on Anguilla.  One of the finest is Devonish Gallery, located in the West End on the main road.  I had the pleasure last evening to attend the opening of an exhibition by the artist Antoine Chapon at Devonish.  This Bordeaux-born artist has lived in St. Martin for years, and his current exhibition of oils and giclee prints on paper and canvas is definitely worth a visit.  His work captures the ethereal nature of the landscape – very fine work indeed.chapon

My dictionary defines “flotsam” as 1. wreckage from a ship found floating. 2.odds and ends.  To those who love to walk Anguilla’s many beaches, beachcombing is part of the fun, and for an artist like Iris Lewis, with an eye for beauty in the everyday, our beaches are an endless source of subject matter for her paintings.  The gallery has just received 3 of the new “Flotsam Series” paintings in, and I think the quality of these works is first-rate.  The flotsam, mostly old washed up ropes, frame the landscape of the painting – such wonderful original work by this artist.  Information on individual paintings can be found in the “artists” section of this site, by clicking on Iris Lewis’ works.

Flotsam Series on Anguilla!

Thuleau invitationPaul Elliott Thuleau will be featured in a solo show at the Oceana Gallery in St. Thomas this month – please drop by should your travels take you to the USVI.  This is the third exhibition of this artists work internationally this year (see earlier blog entries for exhibition details in Bulgaria and Paris), and is an accomplishment worth applauding.

Thuleaus’ works are superb architectural landscapes – Savannah Gallery has a wonderful new selection of giclee prints by this artist, so drop by and have a look here, as well.

Jacala for lunch

I was having one on my back-porch chats with clients this week – art, gossip, food etc., and they told me I should start blogging on great meals I’ve had on Island.  To the end, I’m just back from enjoying a wonderful lunch at Jacala, on Meads Bay.  It’s a new restaurant on Anguilla, just opened for about two weeks now.  I had the lobster club – superb!!  Instead of fries, the chef prepares a sort of uber-delicious roast potato dish, seasoned with herbes de provence.

I’ll be back for sure – their menu looked terrific.jacala lunchjacala view

Sunset Walkies

Posted by: frank in News No Comments »

After a couple of days of clouds and rain ( much appreciated by gardens and cisterns, less appreciated by those wanting the beach…. ), the skies cleared today.  Sunset is spectacular, and even Luther and Lucy decided to pose for my camera on our walk tonight.  Lola was trailing a little, on a ridge watching us suspiciouslysunset walkie…..

Holiday Time……

………….and the Gallery is already full of kids!IMG00201-20091217-1325

I think I finally figured out why I, and many others, share a special affinity for the new paintings of Jo-Anne Mason.Lunch.  “The Edge of the Island” series of paintings are wonderful “portraits” of restaurants which ring this Island, and combine two loves of many – food and art!  This new work, “Almost Lunch at Palm Grove, Junk’s Hole, Anguilla” can only evoke the fondest of thoughts by anyone who has enjoyed this great landmark in the East.  The painting captures the clarity of the light, and the splendor of the isolation of this Bay.

Kari Matz – new arrivals

Posted by: frank in News No Comments »

Kari Matz is a New York-based painter who I first met on Anguilla, about 2 years ago.  She is mainly self-taught, and her works are inspired by her meditation.  There’s a marvellous tranlucency in her oils, which capture both the physical and spiritual side of the Anguillian landscape.Matz - Beach PathMatz - Yellow Umbrellas

Jo-Anne Mason stamp issue

Congratualtions to Jo-Anne Mason, and the Anguilla Post Office for the great job in publishing the series of stamps, based on Jo-Anne’s botannical drawings.  There was a lovely ceremony to launch the stamp issue on Tuesday, December 1, at the Post Office, in The Valley.  Kudos to the organizers, who did a great job to honour the artist, and theseL1010744L1010748L1010752L1010761 stamps.  There are two originals still available from the stamp drawings.  Please contact me for digital photos, and further information.  Photos, courtesy of Chris Mason.
